Tyson Alualu, a former defensive lineman for Cal, was added by the Detroit Lions on Wednesday to their 53-man active roster.

He had been a member of the practice squad since December 5.

Practically speaking, it was more of a formality because Alualu had been added to the active roster for each of the previous four games—including both playoff contests—after being promoted from the practice squad.

Alualu was a starter in Saturday’s victory over the Buccaneers, earning one tackle and one quarterback hit from a defensive tackle position.

He had substantial playing time in each of those games.

Though Wednesday’s trade eliminates the need for that deal, he would have undoubtedly been promoted from the practice squad for Detroit’s NFC championship game against the 49ers on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Alualu is probably going to start for Detroit against the 49ers in Santa Clara, California, once more.

It’s unclear how this elevation will impact Alaualu’s pay.

On December 5, he inked a $370,800, one-year practice squad contract with the Lions.

Alualu formally occupies the 53-man roster slot held by tight end Brock Wright, who was placed on injured reserve after suffering a forearm injury in Saturday’s victory.

The addition of former Stanford tight end Zach Ertz to the Lions practice squad was the most noteworthy part of the Wednesday deal.

Although it appears likely, the Lions have not formally announced that Ertz would be moved from the practice squad to the starting lineup for Sunday’s game.

This week, he has been practicing with the team; the question is whether or not he can rapidly pick up the offense.

“I am aware of his fitness. We need to assess this and find out where he is.

“He’s performed well; the question is whethThis season, Ertz was a member of the Cardinals for seven games, during which he caught 27 receptions for 187 yards and one score.

On October 1, he caught six passes for 63 yards against the 49ers.er this is the right week to use him,” Lions coach Dan Campbell remarked.
