Several sources state that Eric Washington, the defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills, would take over as the Chicago Bears’ new defensive coordinator.
In 2020, Washington, then 54, left the Carolina Panthers to become a member of the coaching staff of the Buffalo Bills
. Before the 2018 season, Washington was elevated to associate head coach by Bills coach Sean McDermott.
Washington had taken over as defensive coordinator following Leslie Frazier’s departure from the team.
From 2008 to 2010, Washington coached in the NFL for three seasons in Chicago.

Since the Bills’ 27-24 Divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the defensive line has been under fire for the past week.
According to Pro Football Reference, the Bills as a unit only mustered six pressures on quarterback Patrick Mahomes and failed to sack him once during the game
. In their December matchup with the opposing squad, the Bills put 11 pressure points on Mahomes and had one sack of him.
“Were we able to coach and play better together? Indeed,” he replied. And we examine that closely. However, I believe that what helps you going ahead are the lessons you gain from it.
The Bills may make changes to their coaching staff throughout the summer, not just Washington. The Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants have reportedly asked linebackers coach Bobby Babich to interview for their open defensive coordinator positions. Babich, a gifted young coach, joined the Bills in 2017 after McDermott took over as head coach. Babich’s employment as Buffalo’s defensive coordinator is probably a prerequisite for his continued employment there.
Prior to the 2022 season, Marcus West was hired by the Bills as their assistant defensive line coach. It’s unclear if they plan to search outside the company or internally for a replacement for Washington.
On Friday, Jacques Cesaire, a former assistant defensive line coach with the Bills, inked a contract to become the defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns.
