The New York Giants made many changes to their coaching staff on Wednesday as they continue to solidify their roster for next season. New York made three internal promotions and hired a position coach and assistant. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants have hired Charlie Bullen, an Illinois Fighting Illini assistant, as their outside linebackers coach.

The Giants have now added associate head coaching duties to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka’s job description. Meanwhile, quarterback coach Shea Tierney has been named pass-game coordinator, and defensive back coach Jerome Henerson will share the same responsibility. Zak Kuhr, a former Texas State and Tennessee Titans assistant, will join the Giants’ staff next season.

Charlie Bullen, a newbie to the New York Giants, will coach the outside linebackers next season. He worked with the Illinois Fighting Illini last season under the same title. The Fighting Illini struggled on defense last season, allowing 29.4 points per game and ending 6-7. Bullen was the Arizona Cardinals’ outside linebackers coach from 2019 to 2022 under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. According to Bobby Skinner of Jomboy Media, pass rusher Cameron Thomas had the 18th-best win rate in 2022, Bullen’s final season with the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Markus Golden recorded 11 sacks under Bullen.

Bullen was a defensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins for eight seasons prior to joining Arizona. His coaching career began with his alma mater, the Iowa Hawkeyes, in 2009. Over his 11 seasons in the NFL, his teams have an 80-97-1 record, good for a 45% winning percentage.

The Giants concluded the season 6-11, good for third in the NFC East. The offense underperformed, averaging only 15.6 points per game, the third-lowest average in the NFL. The defense did not fare much better, allowing 23.9 points per game. The team fired defensive coordinator Wink Martindale at the end of the season and hired Shane Bowen, a former Tennessee Titans defensive play-caller. Last season, the Titans allowed an average of 21.6 points per game under Bowen.

Despite a dismal season, former first-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux recorded 11.5 sacks and 12 TFL. Dexter Lawrence made the Pro Bowl with 4.5 sacks, and Bobby Okere has 149 tackles, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles.
