He may be famous for saying “He’s a complicated fella” about his team’s former quarterback, but there’s nothing complicated about Mark Murphy’s departure as Green Bay Packers chairman and CEO.
Murphy, who will be 70 years old next summer, is required by the franchise’s statutes to stand aside.
The man who followed Bob Harlan, the team’s most influential chairman who turned the organization around in the early 1990s, had large shoes to fill.
Murphy was put to the test early in his tenure, as the Packers switched from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers in his first year as head coach.
Since then, Murphy has overseen changes at general manager, head coach, and a second quarterback transition from Rodgers to Jordan Love, all while guiding the team’s financial position and growing its footprint outside Lambeau Field.
He will unofficially end his tenure next April as the organization and city fulfill one of his objectives by holding the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay.
What does it look like for the Packers to locate a replacement for Murphy? The team provided some specifics about its search process on Wednesday, despite the fact that the most likely candidate is already in house.
The Packers’ Board of Directors will form a search committee, with Ed Policy expected to be the front-runner.
The son ofFormer San Francisco 49ers chairman/CEO Carmen Policy, Ed has been with the team as general counsel since 2012, first as Vice President and then as Chief Operating Officer in 2018.
2025 should be another year of transition for the Packers. But, hopefully, change at the top of the organization will result in a change in playoff fortunes from the previous 13 seasons.
