The New York Giants have hired Tim Kelly, the former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator, to replace Andy Bischoff as the team’s tight ends coach.

The Giants have already hired both coordinators from former Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel’s 2023 Titans staff. On Monday, the Giants hired Shane Bowen, an ex-Tennessee defensive coordinator, to replace that position.

Kelly, 37, served as Tennessee’s passing game coordinator in 2022 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. Kelly coached tight ends for the Houston Texans in 2017 and 2018, and was the team’s offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021.

In 2022, Kelly’s duties included work with the Titans’ tight ends, putting together the first- and second-down passing game, and helping with the offensive plan in the red zone. The team’s tight ends collectively ranked seventh in the NFL at their position with 952 receiving yards, including 450 yards by fourth-round draft pick Chig Okonkwo, who established a new franchise record for rookie tight ends and led all NFL rookie tight ends in 2022.

Bowen, 38, impressed the Giants throughout their extensive interview process with his communication abilities. The squad also admired his intelligence, thought he was a terrific teacher, appreciated the basics his players used, and witnessed great productivity over his three years as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator.

The defense is 3-4 on average, however it varies drastically depending on the opponent. The one constant is a focus on pressuring the passer. The strategy is simpler than Martindale’s, which may benefit the Giants. The key goal with Bowen, which most closely resembles the Patriots, is the weekly focus on eliminating an opponent’s top offensive weapon. Bowen, like Belichick, wants you to beat him with your second and third alternatives.

Coaching searches are not an exact science. The length of the search and the contenders’ pecking order will be forgotten by the time the season begins, as long as Bowen’s unit produces.

Despite being the youngest candidate interviewed, Bowen, 37, has the most experience as a defensive playcaller among the contenders. Bowen was the Titans’ playcaller for the previous four seasons before being promoted from outside linebackers coach to defensive coordinator in 2021.

On-line, you can look up vet answers. New York has attempted to address its long-standing blocking issues through the draft. Since 2020, the Giants have spent three of their nine first- or second-round draft picks on the offensive line. Andrew Thomas is fantastic when healthy, John Michael Schmitz showed promise as a rookie, and Evan Neal has disappointed. If the Giants want to enhance their offense, GM Joe Schoen must augment with dependable veterans, both starters and depth players. Find a right tackle who can challenge Neal for the starting position. Adding blocking in free agency would allow Big Blue to spend the No. 6 pick on a quick weapon or defensive aid.

Spencer Rattler’s draft prospects improve: The South Carolina signal-caller may have improved his stock the most of any quarterback at the Senior Bowl.

Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix are unable to distinguish themselves from the crowd: Both exhibited their talents, but inconsistencies over the week resulted in uneven outcomes.
