Giants employ former Titans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly to coach tight ends.

The New York Giants have hired Tim Kelly, the former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator, to replace Andy Bischoff as the team’s tight ends coach.

The Giants have already hired both coordinators from former Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel’s 2023 Titans staff. On Monday, the Giants hired Shane Bowen, an ex-Tennessee defensive coordinator, to replace that position.

Kelly, 37, served as Tennessee’s passing game coordinator in 2022 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. Kelly coached tight ends for the Houston Texans in 2017 and 2018, and was the team’s offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021.

Kelly, 37, was Tennessee’s passing game coordinator in 2022 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023. Kelly coached tight ends for the Houston Texans in 2017 and 2018, then served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021. Bowen, 38, impressed the Giants with his communication abilities during their extensive interview process. The club also admired his brilliance, thought he was a terrific teacher, appreciated the basics his players used, and witnessed outstanding results while he was in charge of Tennessee’s defenses over the last three years. The defense is primarily 3-4, however it varies drastically depending on the opponent. The only constant is the emphasis on rushing the passer. The strategy is simpler than Martindale’s, which could benefit the Giants. Bowen’s major goal, which most closely resembles the Patriots, is to eliminate an opponent’s top offensive weapon on a weekly basis. Bowen, like Belichick, wants you to beat him with your second and third choices.
Coaching searches are an imprecise science. The length of the search and the pecking order of the contenders will be forgotten by the time the season begins, as long as Bowen’s unit produces.

Despite being the youngest candidate interviewed, Bowen, 37, has the most experience as a defensive play caller in the pool of applicants. Bowen was the Titans’ play caller for the past four seasons before being promoted from outside linebackers coach to defensive coordinator in 2021.
