In order to compete next season, the Dallas Cowboys would benefit from a new start following their playoff elimination at the hands of the Green Bay Packers.

The problem is, if wide receiver Michael Gallup wishes to improve later in the season, the same may be said about him as well.
Throughout the regular season, the Cowboys demonstrated their dominance.

This was evident at the end of the regular season, as Dallas’ 12-5 record helped them win the NFC East division.

Cowboys 'Bold Move' to Cut WR Michael Gallup? That's Not 'Bold'

But when they faced and lost to the Green Bay Packers in the wild card round, that all changed.

The NFL was caught off guard by this unexpected loss for the Jordan Love-led team, which might force the Cowboys to make some personnel adjustments.

Letting Michael Gallup and his $57.5 million deal expire in the offseason is one of the anticipated changes.

In his piece for ESPN, Todd Archer goes into further detail:

Despite knowing Gallup was coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the Cowboys signed him to a five-year, $57.5 million contract in 2022, but the deal hasn’t worked out.

With his health no longer an issue, he caught 39 passes in 2022 and 34 passes in 2023.

The Cowboys will require as much salary space as possible because they are considering a deal that would placeb CeeDee Lam among the highest-paid receivers this summer.

Gallup’s $8.5 million basic contract becomes guaranteed on the fifth day of the league year, thus his future will need to be decided soon.

The only difficult part: in the playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers, Gallup recorded his first 100-yard performance since sustaining a knee injury.

Would that hold enough potential to keep him around? wrote Archer.

It would be wise to release Gallup prior to the start of the next season, as he hasn’t performed up to the expectations Dallas placed on him.

By doing this, the wide receiver and Dallas can both improve individually.
