New York’s ORCHARD PARK (AP) — Days before he was set to become a free agency, Taylor Rapp was re-signed by the Buffalo Bills to a three-year contract deal on Friday, starting the process of filling their secondary needs.
Rapp, 26, will now have the chance to assume a starting position after serving as Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde’s veteran backup for the majority of the previous campaign.
As part of a significant player purge motivated by the salary cap, Buffalo released Poyer on Wednesday. Hyde, who is nearing the end of his deal, is thinking about retiring.
Rapp played his first four NFL seasons at different secondary positions with the Los Angeles Rams before signing a free agent contract with the Bills this past offseason.
He was deployed in a hybrid safety/linebacker role in Buffalo to cover for linebacker Matt Milano and cornerback Tre’Davious White, who suffered season-ending injuries.
This gave him the chance to become acquainted with the defensive scheme. Rapp played in 16 games last season, including four starts, and finished with one interception and one forced fumble.
