According to an insider, the Yankees might reunite with their star at the trade deadline.

The New York Yankees’ starting rotation has surprised some people this season, but there is still space for improvement.

New York appears to be a legitimate World Series contender, despite the fact that it now without one of its finest players. Gerrit Cole, the Yankees’ 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner, has yet to appear in a game this season, but he should return shortly and provide a significant boost to the rotation.

The Yankees are also expected to explore for ways to acquire more depth before the trade deadline this summer, and ESPN’s Buster Olney has identified New York Mets pitcher Luis Severino as a possible trade option.

“With the 30 teams generally relying more and more on relievers to absorb innings, and with the usual wave of injuries to starters around the game — like the Marlins’ Jesus Luzardo — there might be few starting pitchers available at the deadline,” observed Olney. “The 30-year-old Severino would check a number of boxes: He’s been pitching well early this season, with a 3.22 ERA in his first ten starts, four home runs allowed and 50 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings. Severino spent the winter perfecting a sinker that appears to be working well for him and resolving his previous issue with tipping pitches.

“His contract would also be quite inexpensive. Severino signed a one-year, $13 million contract in the hopes of having a bounce-back season before re-entering the free-agent market — and, if the Mets do business like they did with Max Scherzer last summer, they may prefer to pay off the player’s salary in exchange for a better prospect package. And, having spent his whole career in New York, he has big-market and postseason experience, making him a potential match for a broader variety of clubs, including the New York Yankees, if they suffer any injuries.”

As a Yankee, Severino was named to two All-Star teams and was once regarded as one of the best pitchers in the American League. Injuries interrupted his career, but he is now fit and starting to resemble his former self.

If he can remain healthy for the next several months and the Mets decide to trade him, why not contact them if you’re the Yankees?
