Birmingham City’s star player has expressed his deepest desire to depart following Tony Mowbray’s resignation
According to Wales manager Robert Page, Jordan James’ departure from Birmingham City this summer following the Blues’ relegation to League One would be expected.
James, 19, has quickly established himself at the international level since making his senior Wales debut 14 months ago.
In January, the midfielder’s performances for both club and nation prompted interest from Italian clubs Atalanta and Fiorentina.
There has also been conjecture of Premier League interest in James, which has become louder since Birmingham’s relegation from the Championship.
“I think he has proven at top international level, against top midfielders in Croatia, to name one team, [that] he is more than capable of playing at that level as a [number] six,” Page stated.
“I am aware that there is definite interest. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was gone. We’ll have to wait and see.
Academy product James has made 104 senior appearances for Birmingham and scored ten goals.
He appeared 47 times for his side in 2023-24, but was unable to prevent Birmingham from being relegated on the last day of the season.
James is under contract at St Andrew’s until the summer of 2025, with the option for an additional year under the deal he signed in July 2022.
Page believes Birmingham may try to keep James as they plan a League One promotion drive next season.
“It depends on Birmingham.” If they believe they can move right back up next year and want to give it a go, we’ll see,” Page said.
Birmingham are now without a manager after Tony Mowbray, who has been on sick leave since February, stepped down to focus on his health.
Former manager Gary Rowett returned to the club as temporary manager in March and might potentially be a contender for the permanent position.
