Three Oklahoma Sooners players land on the 2025 college football Hall of Fame ballot.

Former Sooner Josh Heupel, Rocky Calmus, and George Cumby are all on the ballot for next year’s class.

Three Oklahoma Sooners appear on this year’s ballot for the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame class.

Linebacker George Cumby, linebacker Rocky Calmus, and quarterback Josh Heupel are among the 77 former athletes named as candidates for the 2018 class. Heupel and Calmus have appeared on the ballot many times.

Heupel quarterbacked the Sooners from 1999 to 2000 and was a key figure in Bob Stoops’ OU rebirth. After setting nearly every passing record as a transfer from Snow Junior College in 1999, he led the Sooners to the national championship in 2000.

He received the Walter Camp Award, the Archie Griffin Award, and was voted AP Player of the Year and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He was also a consensus All-America in 2000, throwing for 3,850 yards and 38 touchdowns in 1999 and 3,606 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2000. Heupel remains eighth in school history with 7,456 yards of total offense and 56 touchdown throws. He is now the head coach at the University of Tennessee.

Calmus was the defensive captain of the Sooners’ 2000 national championship team, a Jenks legacy player and a holdover from the John Blake era who led the legendary Sooners’ defense to one of the most dominant seasons in school history from 1999 to 2001. He was a two-time consensus All-American in 2000-01, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2000, and received the Dick Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Award as a senior in 2001. He ranks sixth in school history with 431 career tackles and first with 59 tackles for loss.

Cumby was a force to be reckoned with on Barry Switzer’s late 1970s teams, earning three All-American honors (1977, 1978, and 1979). He was also voted Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year in each of his last two seasons. Calmus’ son, Casen Calmus, is now a walk-on defensive back on the OU squad.

Cumby concluded his career with 437 tackles, ranking fourth in school history, and is tied for third most interceptions by a linebacker with five. His 160 tackles in 1979 rank fourth in program history, while his 154 in 1977 rank ninth. He is also tied for seventh in school history with 19 tackles in a game in 1977 and was a first-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in 1980. Cumby is now a preacher in the Houston area.

On Monday, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame emailed the votes to almost 12,000 NFF members for deliberation.

The 2025 class will be announced in early 2025, with more exact details to follow. The class will be officially inducted on December 9, 2025, in Las Vegas.

The College Football Hall of Fame currently includes 23 Oklahoma players and six coaches.
