Arch Manning discusses his role in building the future of Texas football.
As he enters his second season at Texas, Arch Manning’s primary job is backup quarterback. Quinn Ewers opted to return for the 2024 season and intends to stay on the 40 Acres for at least one more season. While On3’s Andy Staples believes Manning will play at some point, all he can do now is wait patiently for his turn to be the full-time starter.
Steve Sarkisian does allow Manning to wear his recruiting cap, however. Texas has brought in some excellent talent over the last two cycles, and the former Five-Star Plus+ product has certainly contributed. It’s been a Manning staple, whether recruiting from Louisiana or convincing offensive players to play in the system.
“I’m still helping guys come in and help build our team for the future,” Manning told the media. “I do what I can to help them get on campus and come help us out.”
Texas has thrived at wide receiver, particularly since Manning confirmed his commitment in the summer of 2022. Three top-tier players, including five-star Johntay Cook, signed during the 2023 cycle. One year later, five-star Ryan Wingo from St. Louis was a big draw for the Longhorns, and Manning was excited about him.
“Wingo is going to be a stud,” Manning declared at the Manning Passing Academy. “He’s going to play a lot this season. “He’s everything you could want in a wide receiver.”
Sarkisian has used the NCAA transfer portal to make an immediate impact at wide receiver. However, by the time Manning returns to the field full-time, which is projected to be in 2025, Texas will be totally stocked with homegrown wide receiver recruits.
Arch Manning prepared for any playing time during 2024 season
This year, Manning is the primary backup to Ewers, who declared his return to Texas following last year’s College Football Playoff appearance. Prior to the Sugar Bowl, Maalik Murphy entered the transfer portal and committed to Duke, paving the way for the former Five Star Plus+ recruit to become QB2 in Austin.
Manning declined to say how much playing time he expected, saying he is prepared for whatever comes his way. With training camp soon coming, his priority is to improve his craft in case his number is called.
“I feel like I’m getting better every day,” Manning remarked. “I’m just trying to keep ready. Anything might happen. I’m excited, and I’ll be ready.
