BREAKING: Melbourne Storm extends the contracts of two veteran players

Melbourne Storm has extended the contracts of two young players who have made significant progress over the last two years.

Forward Alec Macdonald has signed a four-year deal through the end of the 2028 season, while outside back Grant Anderson has extended his contract for another year to the end of 2025.

Macdonald was born in New Zealand and joined Storm from Wynnum-Manly for pre-season training for the 2022 season. He has since played 35 games for the team.

After impressing all summer, he moved up to make his Storm debut in a round one triumph over the Wests Tigers, becoming player #221.

MacDonald played 12 games in his debut season, another 12 in 2023, and 11 in 2024.

“I’m thrilled to have been awarded a contract for the next few years. It feels like all of my hard work has paid off. “I can now focus on my football and continue to improve,” the 22-year-old stated.

“When I was younger, I struggled to make rep teams, so I’m grateful to Tim Glasby for spotting me and giving me my first opportunity at Storm.” Also, I’m grateful to Bellsa and the club for taking a chance on me.

“When I initially came down, Brisbane was my home, but now I consider Melbourne to be that. I enjoy the club, the atmosphere, and the lifestyle down here.

“I also have a great team and roommate in Joe Chan who I hope also stays with the club so we can progress our careers together.”

Anderson (player #222), born in Newcastle, made his NRL and Storm debut against the Sydney Roosters in round 14 two years ago, memorably scoring two tries in a win.

His seven appearances this year, five of which were in the starting lineup, are his most in an NRL season, and he now has 17 in total, including starts in the Storm’s past four victories, with more to come as the club approaches the finals.

‘This is my third year here, and I’m excited to stay for longer because the club is like a second family,’ the 24-year-old explained.

“I was playing under-20s when Covid struck, and to be honest, I had no idea where I would wind up professionally.

“I was lucky to get picked up by the Northern Pride for a season, followed by the Sunshine Coast Falcons. I came down to the Storm for a preseason trial, and the rest is history.

“I always dreamed of playing NRL, so to be here and continue doing that is incredibly special, and for my family and partner for all the sacrifices and love they have given to help me along the way, I can’t wait to rip in.
